Trying or Training

November 26, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Contributed by Dr. Dennis Buckley, Affiliate in Pasadena, CA

If you wanted to run a marathon how would you prepare in anticipation?

Would you go out and TRY to run 26.2 miles or would you devise a plan to TRAIN yourself to accomplish such a feat?

Trying to run 26.2 miles without any training would prove to be nearly impossible and you could injure yourself by pushing beyond your capabilities. To cover that distance takes time to build up the strength and endurance required.

Why would someone TRY to be healthy instead of TRAINING to be healthy? Why would someone try to be more generous, disciplined, spiritual, honest, professional, etcetera instead of training to be that way?

Trying can be the first step to move in a new direction but it is not the last step. It is a tiny step, a baby step. Trying can fool us into thinking we are improving but the key to long lasting change is training and quick fixes rarely last. Committed training through disciplined action is the key to long lasting change and optimum performance.

Exercise and Nutrition only get you part way to your goal. When it comes to your health and living your 100 Year Lifestyle, you need to train yourself in 5 areas: Neurology, Nutrition, Endurance, Strength and Structure.

Restoring the structure of your spine and nervous system gives you the potential to become a master at whatever it is for which you are training. All 5 areas integrate together, enhance each other and are required if you seek quantity of years and quality of health.

You will train in these areas by choice or by necessity. Necessity follows crisis. If you want to avoid an untimely and expensive crisis then train with consistency.

Your training will be optimized through Chiropractic Care. There are 3 types of care: Crisis Care, Critical Transition and Lifestyle Care. Crisis Care is based on need and takes you to the point of relief and stability. Lifestyle Care is based on want and supports the health goals you have for your life now and as you age.

The Critical Transition is critical. It opens up greater opportunity to reach and surpass those goals and is vital to the regeneration of your body’s innate ability to heal itself and function at optimum levels.

If a crisis does appear you will still be better able to deal with it and recover by the training already done. Take a good look at yourself. In the vital areas of life are you TRYING or really TRAINING? Make the choice today to TRAIN and reap the benefits tomorrow and for years and years to come.

Timing is Everything

November 26, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Time. We measure it, live by it, spend it, give it and sometimes waste it. Most of us wish we had more hours in day, more weeks to complete a project, more minutes before missing the flight, more time to say what we really wanted to say. Yes, timing is everything.

What if we had more time than we thought and we just haven’t discovered that yet? Consider this as the advanced notice that like it or not, want to or not, most of us have the potential to live longer than we ever imagined. What the journey looks like getting there, is up to us. How we use the time will be our legacy.

Measure your time. How much time do you have left? No one knows for sure. Here’s a simple calculation to determine one part of the best guess answer: Take the age of your oldest relative ever and subtract your current age from that number. The answer is your Minimum Potential Years Remaining. Your M-PYR. Genes are only a minor factor for life expectancy. The way you choose to live hour by hour, day to day, from one year to the next is your lifestyle. Lifestyle choices play a major role in life expectancy for you and for your family. If the choices are sedentary, monotonous, stressful, and unhealthy your time may be limited. If the choices are active, exhilarating, positive and vitalistic your time could be extended beyond your imagination.

Measure your time by your lifestyle choices and ask yourself if you like what you see. How you take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally now affects the future measurement of your time, your life. Take care of your body and take special care of your spine. It protects your nervous system which is your personal IT system designed to integrate your mind and body for perfect communication between the two.

Live, spend and give your time. Lifestyle choices either free us up to spend time with and give time to others or they consume us in a crisis to crisis survival mindset. Those who live life fully have made daily choices to use their time wisely, to incorporate self-care before crisis sets in, and give out of their abundance. People who are at peace in their life are able to give back to their community. The healthy balance that comes from physical well-being, reduced stress, and habits that strengthen the individual’s passions enable them to make better choices over and over. Develop social circles filled with the type of person who is positive, healthy and focused and be built up while you build up others. Exercise together, serve in your community together, eat healthy foods together, attend inspiring lectures together. If you want to do something different with your life and your time, you can. Change is easy, thinking about change is hard.

Schedule your time. Your schedule will either dominate all of your time or you will be master over your schedule. Set aside time to take care of yourself. If you put it off, and your health suffers, the rest of the schedule can fall apart without warning. You can’t afford to get sick. Overbooking your day, week and month only to be forced to scramble and scurry is detrimental.

Plan ahead, make appointments to get your spine and nervous system checked regularly, and choose to live like time is on your side. But only if you manage it wisely.

It’s impossible to predict exactly how long you will live so why not live your best life every day of your life like you will live to 80, 90, 100 years or beyond? Live your ideal 100 Year Lifestyle starting today.

Homework Headaches

November 26, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Successful homework sessions don’t just happen. A little effort, planning and support make the difference between the headache, frustration and battleground around the completion of homework and the peaceful smooth sailing episode of your dreams.

The Real Headache – Afternoon headaches can be symptomatic of numerous causes. Getting to the cause is vital. A chiropractic examination or check-up will determine if there is misalignment of the neck, shoulders or other part of the spine – a common cause of headaches. Many times, there is immediate relief. Is the book bag or backpack too heavy? Did an injury occur during practice or rehearsal? Is dehydration possible? Is an essential vitamin or mineral missing from meals? Address the cause as soon as possible. Some chiropractic practices offer nutritional recommendations in addition to spine and nervous system services.

Study Skillset
Set Up – Arrange the study area to allow focus, good posture, and time management. Eliminate distractions and the battle stations structure. Successful homework sessions begin and end positively so determine what works for the best long term benefit. Good set-up includes a reset of thoughts. If today was a challenge, remember that tomorrow is a new day. Recalling successes, big or small, that occurred through the day help redirect discouragement and fatigue.

Stretch – Sitting for extended time can cause discomfort, a fidgety feeling, and a sense of boredom. Set a timer or alarm as a reminder to stand up and stretch, walk around the room, climb up and down the flight of stairs and breathe deeply. While standing, rest your eyes by looking out the window or simply closing them briefly. If it is a challenge to sit or concentrate, ask when the last chiropractic exam or checkup was scheduled. There can be pressure on a nerve or misalignment without pain that causes dis-ease in organs, systems or functions.

Snack – Keep nutritious snacks on hand to regulate blood sugar and help with concentration. Avoid sugary foods. Water is essential. Herbal tea may help de-stress from the day. If eating for the sake of “something to do while studying” is a habit, make changes now and snack sensibly. Avoid using food as a reward. View it as fuel to keep the engine running.

Reset – During the break, check your calendar and arrange the next chiropractic appointment to reset focus on the mind-body connection. This action can be a huge reward at the following homework session. After a break, do a “reset” with good intention and purposeful thought. Mark off what has been completed. Set a new goal for the next segment of the homework or study session. Reset the alarm or timer.

Success Awaits – The familiar saying, “They didn’t plan to fail. They failed to plan.” speaks as a reminder that in the same way homework won’t do itself, the body needs help to perform at its best. Small steps and small changes lead to achieving goals of all types. Contact us today to assist you in reaching yours.

Why Medical Conditions Respond

November 26, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Many adults come in for their first chiropractic visit because of backaches, headaches, disc problems, digestive conditions or hormone imbalances. The list of medically diagnosed conditions or health problems that lead people to a chiropractor is lengthy.

Parents often bring their children in for chiropractic care because they have watched them suffer from conditions such as ear infections, asthma, colds, colic, ADHD or sinus problems. Some conditions are severe and include concussions, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and autism.

Do these people get great results?

Do we treat these conditions?

The answers are yes, a high number of patients get excellent results and no, we do not treat the conditions themselves. Our primary focus is to locate and correct nervous system imbalances and spinal subluxations that can contribute to or cause the problems in the first place, regardless of the diagnosis.

Getting your nervous system functioning properly is essential to help the body heal itself regardless of the diagnosed condition or other treatments that you may have undergone.

In fact, if you have a health condition of any kind, the nerve component should be one of the first evaluations you receive.

Why? Because if there is a nerve system component to your condition, nothing you do for your problem will be as effective until your nerve system gets healthy.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates the function of every cell, tissue and organ of your body and helps you adapt to your environment. Your nervous system is vital in helping your body cope with stress, digest food and eliminate waste products. It will also help you perform at your highest level when engaging in athletic activities.

Unfortunately, exploring the nerve component of most conditions is not addressed by the majority of health care providers and symptomatic relief becomes the primary focus. While we certainly want you to feel better quickly, the underlying cause must also be addressed. There are a number of ways that we can evaluate the function of your nervous system.

Whether you are suffering from an acute or chronic injury or illness, or you want to improve your health and quality of life, now is the time to schedule a chiropractic check-up.

Pain Relief Drug Concerns

November 26, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

The Food and Drug Administration has approved the powerful opioid narcotic painkiller OxyContin for children as young as 11. While we are compassionate for everyone in pain, especially children, we are also very concerned about how their pain is being addressed. Parents must become educated and cautious. Consider the following before introducing any pain reliever, especially a narcotic that has the potential to create long-term addiction and abuse.

-Nearly two million Americans, aged 12 or older, either abused or were dependent on opioid painkillers in 2013.

-“One in 25 high school seniors has abused OxyContin” said Scott Hadland, a specialist in adolescent medicine and substance abuse treatment at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

-The number of prescription painkillers sold has quadrupled since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

-More than 44,000 Americans die of drug overdoses each year. Some people who become addicted to prescription painkillers switch to using heroin, which has become cheaper and easier to access than OxyContin.

-Every day, 44 people die as a result of prescription opioid overdose.

-There were 43,982 drug overdose deaths in the United States alone in 2013. Of these, 22,767 (51.8percent) were related to prescription drugs.

-Drug misuse and abuse caused about 2.5 million emergency department (ED) visits in 2011. Of these, more than 1.4 million ED visits were related to prescription drugs.

We don’t want you or a loved one to become a statistic. If you are considering medication for yourself or for them and are looking for a healthier long term solution, keep in mind the holistic options available that help the body heal itself and function the way it’s supposed to.

Chiropractic care can get to the cause and relieve pain resulting from spine and nervous system imbalance. Research published in the January 2005 issue of the scientific periodical the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, (JMPT) showed that patients with chronic spinal pain syndromes did markedly better under chiropractic care than patients who received medication.

Seeking chiropractic care as part of the journey to relief can result in improved conditions today and enhance your quality of life as you age.

An Epidemic of Neurological Disorders

November 26, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

Nervous system disorders ranging from autism, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease represent just a fraction of the growing number of neurological conditions that are affecting people of all ages in our society today. So much so that Robert Zieve, MD recently wrote in an article called, “Neurological Disorders: The Growing Epidemic of the 21st-Century,” that chronic neurological diseases are fast becoming the debilitating epidemic of our time.

Different than the headline grabbing diseases such as cancer and heart disease that frighten us because they are potentially deadly, chronic neurological diseases can destroy our quality of life including our ability to think, be active and relate to other people. They also have the potential to cause chronic pain and suffering that can last for decades and making us a burden to our loved ones which is something that nobody would want.

Dr. Zieve also states, “Having a healthy brain and nervous system is vital to being able to think clearly without which our active will lacks intelligent guidance and is weakened”.

Your nervous system controls and coordinates the function of every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. Keeping your nervous system healthy as a priority and a part of your lifestyle is essential if you want to be healthy today as well as over the course of your entire lifetime. As the master controller, problems in the nervous system can cause or mimic any condition or disease you can name. This includes problems with the heart, lungs, hormones, stomach, intestines, reproductive glands as well as your arms, legs, fingers and toes.

For this reason, Chiropractic examinations are more important than ever because they evaluate the health of the spinal column and the nervous system. Spinal subluxations, one such condition that is extremely common in adults and children, can alter the function of your nervous system and affect your health on every level even though it may lie asymptomatic for decades. Waiting until symptoms show up means that your condition has already become chronic by the time you feel it.

Don’t let this happen to you. These spinal conditions that affect your nerves can be caused by the birth process, learning to walk as a child, contact sports, stress, sitting too much and environmental toxicity, just to name a few.

A healthy nervous system is essential for you to be able to adapt to your environment in a healthy way. Dr. Zieve states, “We live in a toxic world. The great majority of chemicals we now take in daily were not on the planet 30 years ago. These toxins become neurotoxins, damaging the nervous system.”

You can control your exposure to many of these toxins by making healthier nutritional choices and avoiding environmental toxicity whenever possible.

Keeping your nervous system healthy with regular chiropractic check-ups can make a difference in your body’s ability to resist and adapt to these toxins.

It’s no wonder millions are making chiropractic Lifestyle Care a priority in their family budget. Don’t wait for a crisis to force you to act. Schedule your appointment today.
